San Diego - Mother's Kitchen
The long awaited relaunching of San Diego Mother's Kitchen is finally here! Our program came to a halt a few years ago when the City of San Diego changed the laws regarding how groups may gather to feed the homeless. Since then we have been determined to find a new venue to serve the homeless in our community. With Amma's grace we finally have!
We are very excited to have joined forces with San Diego Interfaith Community Services. Interfaith Community Services offers a large variety of resources to our homeless community including a food pantry for which they "collect and distribute more than 567,500 food items, providing an average of 10,900 lbs of food each week to struggling families and individuals."
SD Mother's Kitchen has begun collecting canned food and other essential items from Amma's children here in San Diego to help support this pantry.There is a collection basket at every Satsang for the canned food and we also have a team that shops for food items via donations from devotees every week. There has been an outpouring of support from our Satsang and each week it only seems to increase. Bringing a can of food from home to donate is becoming a habit...a very good habit.
Furthermore, we now have the great opportunity to prepare and deliver approximately 150-300 bagged lunches to Interfaith Community Services every month. We are working towards meeting once a month in North County San Diego and also once a month in East County San Diego at different devotees homes. We make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches; adding an apple, granola bar, fruit juice, chips and sometimes a candy to the bagged lunches.This has turned out to be a really amazing experience for San Diego Mother's Kitchen volunteers.
It feels like the opportunity to serve is such a gift and that we are in fact receiving so much more than we can ever give. As a Satsang we are so glad to finally have an outlet to serve our homeless community here in San Diego via Interfaith Community Services.
